What is Rigoletto about?
The opera opens with a party at the court of the Duke of Mantua. When Rigoletto makes a joke on the expense of Count Monterone whose daughter has been seduced, the count calls a curse upon him. Rigoletto has tried to shield his daughter Gilda from the outside world but soon learns that she has met, and fallen in love, with the Duke. When the Duke's henchmen comes to kidnap Gilda from her home, Rigoletto is devastated.
Rigoletto soon learns who kidnapped his daughter and becomes obsessed with vengance, so he decides to hire a hitman to kill the Duke. The hitman's sister feels sorry for the Duke and ask that his life is spared. The hitman agrees but only if anyone arrives to die instead. Gilda who has overheard the conversation arives instead of the Duke and is killed.
